I passed the body of a young fox cub, tumbled to the side of the road….
And all the free-floating sorrow and grief, micro and macro,
Poured into this specificity…..
This one darling life extinguished so cavalierly…
I don’t know if this is a specific fox cub I knew, who had greeted me outside my car door when tiny, and each night, wanting to play with me and the dogs..
When I returned home, the dogs and I set forth to find, move, honor the little fox…
I draped a necklace around the little body….
And remembered in an Ursula Leguin short story, GrandMother Spider saying,
“O don’t worry about Coyote and Fox, they are always being killed and returning… We want you to pledge to be the cultural agents of the Wild, on their behalf, in the realm of human culture….
