Let’s take a minute to talk about political language through looking at the use of ‘ceasefire’.

Using ‘ceasefire’ is wrong, as has been said many times by many people, because it is language appropriate for war. And this is many things, but war is not one of them.

This is the easy part. The more interesting bit relates to the political power struggle unfolding between the opposers and supporters of this no-war, and how language informs it.

In this context, using ‘ceasefire’ signals cowering surrender to the establishment worldview.

You see, accepting and applying political language suitable for war pulls the rug from under any sense of urgency (wars, unlike genocides, are thought about as phenomena that may best be left to run their natural course). But it also, and even more importantly in the realm of the psychololitical, telegraphs that you are too afraid to insist on your version of reality, which disqualifies you immediately from the (fight) (dance?) for power.

Reality is never shaped by those afraid to call it how they see it. So call it what you think it is. Without some degree of fearlessness, we are always shackled and bound by fear. ‘Ceasefire’ should not be the choice of people who seek a more just world. While it purports to express an opposing view to establishment, what it really does is cement establishment stranglehold on language and consciousness.
