dedication is the prerequisite for the journey….

So, before we convene, let’s all consider a
dedicated desire for self and world….

which feels deftly resonant with now…. 

a place to which we journey this evening…

Deep inside

Amongst the shadows 

And flickering firelight,

The golden skulls gather 

Claiming their place in the cave. 

I become aware…  

They are peering  at me from the 

black dark 

Of their eyes.

I become aware…

It is their secrets that have kept them Sentient.

I become aware…

They are now willing to share.

With my dirt stained feet  

And my head bowed

I stand before them.

They begin to whisper so silently that

I have to  close my own eyes 

to listen to theirs.

I am their humble novice. 

I begin Grinding 

Leaves, sticks, stones, roots… 

In a small wooden bowl.

In a small wooden bowl 

Powders will become potions.

As promised.

This is no atmosphere of death.

This is no place to forget.

This is a place to remember. 

A place to believe  what was once lost is now returning,

A place to know what needs to be found will make itself known,

A place that insists what needs to transform will find itself finally home.

The clean clear water of all life drops from the 

Center fountain 

Into the small wooden bowl,

Shimmering spirits

Rise from the spray on 

diaphanous wings.

One by One

through a crack  in the rock,

They fly.

Into the moonlit sky 

They rise.

Ascending into Peace.

I bend to my knees

Lifting the small wooden bowl to the thin beam of blue light,

And I wait.

There is no need to ask questions.

These medicines will answer 

When they are called to speak. 

I know,

Because all the golden bones 

have spoken.

And thus it is so.

So, yes, we delineate the guiding patterns,

and experimentally come into participatory accord…

There are appointments we each have to keep…

encourage pen and paper,

and

a light covering for eyes, for our journeying….

The purpose of bear rituals is to merge with bears’ healing powers, life ways and nature. Even as far south as ancient Greece, bears were honored in much the same way as the northern European Saami and Lapp tribes cultures still do today. In the 6th century BCE, 35 kilometers north of Athens at a stunningly beautiful place named Brauron, every four years, young girls from Athens who were 5 to 10 years old were brought to Brauron, dressed in saffron-dyed robes, and taught how to dance bear movements as a ritual to honor the memory of a bear spirit associated with Artemis, the guardian spirit of the animals and the forest whose followers had the ability to shape-shift into bears. Today on Crete in a cave on the Akrotiri peninsula near the town of Chania, an annual festival related to bears and the mother of Jesus is still performed on February 2nd. The ritual is named ‘Arkoudiotissa.’ (Holy Bear Mother.)
