and Bicycle Day tomorrow!Martin A Lee is an activist, journalist, and author who has published a number of works, including Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana – Medical, Recreational, and Scientific. He is Co-Founder & Director of Project CBD, a non-profit organization he started with Fred Gardner in 2010.
Lee co-authored his first book, Acid Dreams: The CIA, LSD and the Sixties Rebellion, in 1985. It explored the use of LSD during the 1960’s, including mind control experiments conducted by the CIA.Lee went on to co-found Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) in 1986 in order to eliminate corporate and establishment media bias. He served as the first Editor of the organizations publication Extra! and later became its Publisher. Lee co-authored his second book, Unreliable Sources: A Guide to Detecting Bias in News Media, in 1990 as an expansion on his work with FAIR.
Despite his work in non-fiction literature, Lee may be most recognized for his as an investigative journalist. He was awarded the Pope Foundation Award for Investigative Journalism in 1994. Lee covered the medical cannabis movement for years in the pages of O’Shaughnessy’s, before founding Project CBD.

“Because I had the feeling that it would be worthwhile to carry out more profound studies with this compound, I prepared a fresh quantity of LSD in 1943.”
On Friday, April 16, 1943, after Hofmann mixed up that batch of LSD-25, he was forced to stop his work midday at the Sandoz laboratory and went home after apparently dosing himself by inadvertently contacting the substance.
Hofmann writes, “as I was seized by a peculiar restlessness associated with a sensation of mild dizziness. On arriving home, I lay down and sank into a kind of drunkenness which was not unpleasant and which was characterized by extreme activity of imagination. As I lay in a dazed condition with my eyes closed (I experienced daylight as disagreeably bright) there surged upon me an uninterrupted stream of fantastic images of extraordinary plasticity and vividness and accompanied by an intense, kaleidoscope-like play of colors. This condition gradually passed off after about two hours.”

The notes in Dr. Hofmann’s laboratory journal read as follows:
April 19, 1943: Preparation of an 0.5% aqueous solution of d-lysergic acid diethylamide tartrate.
4:20 P.M.: 0.5 cc (0.25 mg LSD) ingested orally. The solution is tasteless.
4:50 P.M.: no trace of any effect.
5:00 P.M.: slight dizziness, unrest, difficulty in concentration, visual disturbances, marked desire to laugh…
Hofmann had ingested 250 micrograms of LSD-25, diluted into water; believing this to be a rather conservative dose, since most pharmaceuticals are measured in milligrams, not micrograms. However, as we know now, Dr. Hofmann ingested approximately two-and-a-half doses.
