“Turns out that dealing with isolation, stillness and deprivation is a true survival skill! I learned about a new study from the University in Vienna that discovered that the ability to deal with isolation is an ancient human survival trade.
The trade is called the “Cave- competence” and describes our ability to deal with isolation, which of course is helpful now as we strive to survive the current pandemic.
Cave-competence had to develop by those who survived the Ice Age. They were forced to change their Nomad existence to take refuge in caves in order to survive the frosty climate, which lasted for 10.000 years. A rather long period that makes dealing with 1-2 years of Corona seem like a second. During the last Ice Age only about 5 % of humanity survived. They did so by being creative and by practicing art. The magnificent cave drawings of wildlife and of the natural world brought the outer environment back into their cave confinement, and perhaps served to entertain their imagination and phantasy, perhaps similar to our TV or Netflix binging. They managed to be crafty and made tools.
Interesting too is that empathy seemed to have played a big role in Cave-competence and human survival. According to the research, empathy enhances the ability to care for our community, to be considered, to bring the “big world” into our smaller environment, to make our boring existence in confinement richer.
Cave-competence is a useful survival technique, but scientist estimate that on average 1/3 of the population doesn’t have it, and they have the hardest time right now. They experience the current situation as an entrapment. Likely, many of them demonstrate against the lock-down, or believe in irrational conspiracy theories to explain the current misery. I don’t mean to belittle anybody’s suffering, but rather want to highlight the tremendous spirit that resides in us, to help us deal with diversity since the beginning of time. With art, imagination, crafts and a good dose of empathy, we all get through this-together. Stay Safe you all!”
