Responsible Dreamer Dream unto me…

“So it is grief for your lost dream,” Balam Xoc observed without apparent sympathy, “that has kept you from your stone.” (carving the stone, standing in for our weird, some specific daunting creative task. And do we have the creativity? and do we have the time? Has all been squandered?

“No nothing has kept me from the stone…Yet nothing brings me any inspiration ..I cannot remember my dreams.”

“Balam Xoc stared down at him in stony silence, making Akbal feel the shame of his lost courage.”

Then “startled out of his misery,” by a sudden request

“Your dream was from an earlier time…

Our dreams may be thwarted by the actions of other men….or by our own failure to carry them out with courage and conviction. But that is no reason to doubt the truth of what they show us. That is how they are truly lost…”

Akbal: “I will put aside my grief, and try to find a new dream to guide me.”
Balam Xoc: “All our dreams are very old. We make them new with our remembering, and our belief…Go now, and do not fear what may be lost. Think only of how much more we must gain, to make our lives worthy of memory.”
