distilling his medicine contribution, teasing into pertinence to the roiling danger and redemptive possibilities of now…
He does know how a black kid can overcome innumerable challenges to go all kinds of places, play with materially manifesting…
Tis challenging because his book, “Inner Demons,” is not quite-yet-cooked…
and I was wary of the pitch, of finding salvation via enron, at&t, pfizer.. hmmm, yet his indefatigable agent sent me this response:
“Hey Caroline, I had the chance to speak with Roc – here are his thoughts:
1. There is a significant difference between being a black man making it to the top of corporate America and being a white man doing the same, considering that corporations are where the socio-economic power lies, and that black men are overwhelmingly in servitude to that very system – at the bottom of the hierarchy, barely making a living wage. One subverts the dominant paradigm, while the other perpetuates it.
2. Throughout his journey, Roc refused to be a mere cog in the wheel, and he did not wait for someone else’s permission (usually a white man’s) to rise to the top. Instead, he gave himself permission to access the entire body of his intelligence and challenge the power structure and thinking of the corporations he worked with, even while at entry level – in some cases, going on to restructure entire systems from within. In other words, he put himself in a position of leadership – this even when his supervisors attempted to publicly berate him and undermine his accomplishments. Ultimately, that led him to creating an independent life as a systems analyst, working as a consultant but not as an employee – directing those in power instead of taking orders from them, again, turning the power structure on its head. This sample chapter of his book (password “Enron”) exemplifies this point.
3. Roc is eager to leverage all his accomplishments to date, to inspire black youth and other minority or socio-economically disadvantaged groups to step into their power, avoid the trappings of all the “ism”s of our world, refuse to bow to the messages of “can’t,” and learn how to leverage their disadvantages and surrounding angst, channeling those energies to propel them forward.
